Ukoko R’Emotor decries erosion of Urhobo language, presents financial support to students studying BA Linguistics/Urhobo in DELSU

The Ukoko R’Emotor, based in Delta State University, Abraka has decried the erosion of Urhobo language in recent times.
The Association’s President, Chief Matthew Ovedje Eyuren on Saturday, 20th August, 2022 at the Annual Cultural Day of the National Union of Urhobo Students in DELSU, Abraka lamented that Urhobo parents are losing grip of their children in ensuring the regular speaking of the language at home, warning that if urgent steps are not taken, the people are at risk of losing their cultural identity over what the Association termed, ‘possible extinction of the Urhobo language’.
As stakeholders in the campaign for the Urhobo language sustainability, the Association then presented the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N150,000) as financial support to three best students studying Linguistics/Urhobo in the Department of Languages and Linguistics, DELSU, Abraka.
The following three best students got the cash prize of N50,000 each: AKPOMEDAYE Emily Otuvwede (200 level), OKERE Ufuoma (300 level) and ESEJI Jessica Oluchi (400 level) respectively.
The Association’s Vice Chairman, Dr Basil Ihwighwu; Secretary, Dr Efe Ejedafiru; Welfare Director,
Sir Martin Denedo; Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), DELSU Chapter, Comr Monday Izu; Dr Timothy Agboghoroma, Chief Joseph Jowah and Comr Henry Ejovi were in attendance.
